Saanich Archives collects and preserves archival material relating to the Municipality of Saanich.

The collection includes:

  • municipal records (1906-1980)
  • Council minutes (1906-1969)
  • school board minutes (1878-1906)
  • tax collector rolls (1895-1913)
  • over 15,000 images, including photographs, slides, family albums and glass plate negatives from the earliest days of the municipality
  • 3,500 maps and plans
  • oral histories
  • family records
  • pioneer files

Digitization Project: 
Over 2,500 images from our photographic collection are now available to search online, thanks to generous funding from the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC and the Municipality of Saanich.

A NEW HOME FOR THE ARCHIVES
We are now OPEN at the Saanich Centennial Library, 3100 Tillicum Road (next to Pearkes Rec Centre)

Reference Room at Saanich Archives

In September 2007, Saanich Archives moved to a purpose built facility inside the new Saanich Centennial Library. The storage vault is climate controlled and has a chemical fire suppression system to protect the records.  The reference room features exhibits of archival material, newsclippings, directories, reference photographs & maps, early land ownership records, and an excellent collection of books on local and B.C. history.

Public Open Hours :
Monday to Friday,
10:00am - 2:00pm


Saanich Archives:

  • Collects and preserves archival material relating to families featured in the formative years of the Municipality;
  • Conducts oral history interviews of long time local residents;
  • Acquires books, maps or other documentation contributing to a better knowledge and understanding of the area in general and to the Municipality in particular;
  • Produces or assists in producing publications relating to the District of Saanich;
  • Services the research requirements of the Arts, Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee and the Saanich Heritage Foundation; and,
  • Provides copy and reference service.

A description of non-municipal archival holdings is available from the British Columbia Archival Union List.  The British Columbia Archival Union List (BCAUL) database consists of descriptions of records held at 163 publicly-accessible archival repositories in the province.
