Emergency Shelters

Saanich's recreation centres are the designated primary emergency reception centres (shelters) in the event that residents need shelter, food, clothing, etc., following a major disaster.

Residents should monitor local radio stations for emergency public announcements stating where shelters are located

Saanich Emergency Social Services volunteers will set up one or all of these centres, as needed, to help care for victims and to provide a registration and inquiry service.

Volunteers will see to their family's immediate needs first, so it may take some time following a major disaster before emergency reception centres are opened. For this reason, have a plan in place to take care of yourself and your loved ones for the first 72 hours.

The workbook provides guidelines and information on how to set up an emergency plan. The workbook is available from the Fire Department.

For more information call the Saanich Emergency Program office, (250) 475-7140.
