The
Safer School Travel
Program is a web-based program developed by
Safer City to assist Parent Advisory Councils (PAC’s) in developing
Safer School Travel Plan.
Every school should have a Safer School Travel (SST) plan and it the
goal of Safer City to take every school in Saanich through this program
within 5 years. A realistic and balanced approach is required between
providing for the safety of children and the mobility of vehicles.
The Safer School Travel plans strive to:
- identify all issues in the walk/cycle limits of a school
- develop strategies for all modes of transportation
- develop engineering, education and enforcement strategies with short and
long term goals
- develop parent and community initiatives to make the school
community safer
A school's SST committee works with the Saanich Safer City Coordinator
through the step by step program. Once all the issues have been
identified and supporting documentation gathered, stake holders are invited
to participate in developing strategies to reduce the problems.
These stake holders would include the District of Saanich, the school district, community associations, and transit. Each
school will have specific needs to be met and the stake holder group
will be called as required to help resolve issues.
All Safer School Travel plans focus on the three E's - Education,
Enforcement and Engineering. The most cost effective and long lasting
of these is the Education. Driver and pedestrian behaviour can have
immediate impacts. Start today to encourage awareness of safer school
travel at schools in your community.
