Safer School Travel

The Safer School Travel Program is a web-based program developed by Safer City to assist Parent Advisory Councils (PAC’s) in developing Safer School Travel Plan.

Every school should have a Safer School Travel (SST) plan and it the goal of Safer City to take every school in Saanich through this program within 5 years. A realistic and balanced approach is required between providing for the safety of children and the mobility of vehicles.

The Safer School Travel plans strive to:

  • identify all issues in the walk/cycle limits of a school
  • develop strategies for all modes of transportation
  • develop engineering, education and enforcement strategies with short and
    long term goals
  • develop parent and community initiatives to make the school
    community safer

Once all the issues have been identified and supporting documentation gathered, stake holders are invited to participate in developing strategies to reduce the problems. These stake holders would include the District of Saanich, the school district, community associations, and transit. Each school will have specific needs to be met and the stake holder group will be called as required to help resolve issues.

All Safer School Travel plans focus on the three E's - Education, Enforcement and Engineering. The most cost effective and long lasting of these is the Education. Driver and pedestrian behaviour can have immediate impacts. Start today to encourage awareness of safer school travel at schools in your community.

Safer School Travel consists of the following two components:

  1. Supporting Information – provides guidance on the different elements involved in developing School Road Safety Plans. It comprises the following three sections:
    • Background Information -introductory information for developing a SRSP including information papers on topics such as Children in Traffic and the Way to Go! Program.
    • Road Safety Measures - a non-technical description of engineering measures for pedestrians, bicycles, cars and drop-off/pick-up areas.
    • Community Initiatives - guidelines on undertaking community initiatives such as crossing guards, Speed Watch, Parent Parking Patrols and Walking School Buses.

  2. Planning/Application Process – leads the user, step-by-step through the process of developing a School Road Safety Plan.
    • The process comprises seven Activities. Each Activity includes a number of Tasks and some Tasks are divided into Steps.
    • Information, guidelines and examples are provided throughout the process.
    • Logistical support such as templates for agendas, meeting notices, questionnaires and survey forms is provided.
