Residents of Saanich are invited to have a personal opportunity to participate in Olympic Games tradition and history on Friday, October 30, as the Olympic Torch passes through our community on its’ cross Canada journey towards the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
To commemorate the arrival of the Olympic Torch, the District of Saanich will be hosting a route celebration at Braefoot Community Park on Friday, October 30 from 2:30 – 5:30 pm.
The Olympic Torch Celebration will include a variety of interactive stations hosted by Saanich Community Groups including Saanich Minor Hockey, the Saanich Braves, Lakehill Soccer, Native Friendship
Society, Gordon Head Lions, Braefoot Community Association, as well as Saanich Parks and Recreation.
Some of the activities include an opportunity to meet the Salmon Kings mascot Marty, testing hockey skills, mini curling, trying out some winter sports on the Wii, or creating your own Olympic Torch and Banner.
The Reynolds Secondary School Band will be entertaining the crowd along with face painters and balloon artists.

The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will begin its 106-day Canadian journey on October 30, 2009. The Flame’s pan-Canadian journey will culminate on February 12, 2010 when it arrives in Vancouver for the Opening Ceremony before a global viewing audience of billions.
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay route will be the longest domestic Torch Relay in Olympic history, stretching over 45,000 kilometres throughout Canada. Upon its conclusion, the Olympic Flame will have been welcomed in over 1,000 communities and passed within a one-hour of more than 90 per cent of the entire Canadian population.
The Government of Canada is a proud supporter of the Olympic Torch Relay helping to bring the Olympic Flame to as many Canadians as possible.
