Did you know that the definition of a "weed" is "an unwanted plant"?

Presently, we are experiencing a bumper crop of "unwanted" dandelions.  Dandelions are, however, considered a 'nuisance' weed, not a 'noxious weed'. To control these weeds we focus on mechanical control and encourage healthy turf that will, hopefully, out compete the weeds.

Saanich will continue to be managed following the Integrated pest Management Plan (IPM).  Since 1994 we have reduced our use of synthetic pesticides by 95%.  We do not use pesticides for cosmetics or non-essential reasons.  "Non-essential" use means the use of pest control products without first giving preference to available non-pesticide alternatives.

For more information on our IMP Program and the Pest-Free Pledge visit our Pesticide Free Pledge webpage.

For a list and explanation of Saanich's invasive and noxious weeds we invite you to check out the information on the District of Saanich: Invasive Species in our Natural Environment webpage.
