Fairburn Park

Concept Plan Sept 2009

The proposed concept plan, which was presented at an open house on October 28, 2009, will be presented to the Parks Trails and Recreation Advisory Committee in the next couple of months.  The Committee will be asked to endorse the plan, and if successful, the concept plan will subsequently proceed to Council for approval.

Overview

This park is located in the Gordon Head Local Area and is (.502 ha (1.24 acre)) in size.  The land for this park was originally part of the Fairburn Elementary School site which was sold and subsequently subdivided.  The subdivision process led to the dedication of this parcel for park, and the District of Saanich gained ownership of it in May of this year.  Because it is relatively small and because it is used primarily by those within walking distance, the park is classified as a Neighbourhood Park.  Over the summer, Saanich Parks staff completed site work to comply with safety standards and make the park more manageable in the short term.

Now it is the time to look ahead and consider the park’s development over the coming years.  This property has long functioned as part of the greenspace in the neighbourhood, and it will continue this role.  Please have a look at the proposed concept plan and give us your comments or suggestions on the ideas being shown.

Park Name

This park has not yet been officially named and will likely go to Saanich Council for naming in 2010.  Saanich Council Park Naming Policy is to name new neighbourhood parks after an adjacent street.  Because of its history and connection to Fairburn Drive, our recommendation in this case is ‘Fairburn Park’.  Please indicate you opinion of this name, or suggest an alternate name on the questionnaire.

Process

Following this meeting, a proposed concept plan will be finalized for presentation to the Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Committee who will be asked to endorse it.  Once this endorsement is obtained, the Concept Plan will be presented to Saanich Council for approval.  It will then become the official concept which will guide the future development of the park.

Funding

After the concept plan is finalized, the order of magnitude costs can be prepared and included in the multi-year Parks Capital Budget for construction.  It is likely that the development of the park will be phased over several years.  At this time, there is approximately $30,000 in capital funds identified for works in this park in 2010.
