Local History
Zomba was founded as a settlement in 1887 when Captain Howes, a British Consul commissioned
the building of the government hostel. The site was chosen: ..As being a convenient spot
from which to police and blockade the Arab slave traders from the hinter land on their way
down to the Indian Ocean coast and due to its scenic beauty , rich
soils and overflowing streams." (Ministry of Local Government, Malawi publication) Zomba
was made the Capital of the Nyasaland protectorate and remained the Capital of Malawi until
1975.
Economy
Zomba is the site of Chancellor College, one of the largest
constituents of the University of Malawi. Principal
crops grown in the agriculture valley around Zomba are
maize, casava, rice, ground nuts, bananas, beans and sugar
cane. There is also a fishing industry.
