The Saanich Parks and Recreation Active Aging strategy
is now complete! We would like to thank all of those
organizations and individuals that took the time to share
your thoughts and feedback with us!
Active Aging Vision
Our vision is for a community where people can live healthy
and active lives well into their senior years, where older
people are valued for their skills and life experiences
and where they participate in the community in ways that
they choose. Saanich will be a positive place in
which to age when older people say that they live in a community
that encourages their participation in maintaining a healthy
and active lifestyle.
The overall aim of the Active Aging Strategy is to create
more opportunities, within the mandate of the Parks and
Recreation Services Department, for senior Saanich residents
to live active and fulfilling lives.
During the Summer of 2003, Saanich Parks and Recreation
invited community agencies, centre clients and the general
public to give us feedback on our programs and services
for older adults. Thank you for sharing your thoughts
with us!
Following up on the issues and trends that were identified
through the community and centre surveys, we conducted a
series of focus groups in the Fall of 2003 to gain more
in-depth information for inclusion in the Active Aging Strategy.
In addition to surveys and focus groups, the Active Aging
Strategy has drawn on analysis of national and international
seniors' strategies and community forums. There are
94 recommendations in the strategy centered around six key
themes; Transportation,Cost, Programming, Facilities, Staff,
Communications & Marketing.

The World Health Organization Global Age-Friendly Cities Project
The Global Age-Friendly Cities Project is an attempt to make large urban centres around the world better places to live for the aging
population. Over 33 partner cities worldwide have consulted with older persons, community leaders and gerontology experts to identify the
major physical and social barriers to active aging. This knowledge has been used to produce a practical tool to guide advocacy, community
development and policy. In 2006, the Province of British Columbia selected Saanich as a partner city to collaborate in this world-wide
project. Working with support from the Ministry of Health and in partnership with the University of Victoria Centre On Aging, Saanich
has developed over 60 recommendations in eight broad categories. The actions identified in the report address issues and concerns
brought forward in a series of focus groups with Saanich residents and local senior service providers.
The Saanich Report on the Global Age Friendly Cities Project has been completed in conjunction with the release of the World Health
Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities Index on October 1, 2007. The report highlights current initiatives and projects in Saanich and
presents the recommendations for an age-friendly future. Please follow the link to view the full report.
