2008 Saanich Municipal and School Board Elections


Welcome to the District of Saanich, Local Government Election site.

The following is provided for information purposes only. Should you have any questions or require more details,  please contact Legislative Services at 475-1775 or visit our office located on the 2nd floor, Saanich Municipal Hall, 770 Vernon Avenue.

When is the next Election?

The next election will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2008.  Electors in the District of Saanich will vote to elect the following:

  • A Mayor
  • Eight Councillors
  • Two School District #63 School Trustees
  • Nine School District #61 School Trustees

Nomination packages for Mayor, Councillors and School District #63 will be available from Legislative Services on September 2 , 2008.

Please contact the School District #61 Secretary-Treasurer at 475-4106 for information regarding nomination packages.

Are you registered to vote?

The District of Saanich will be using the most recent Provincial Voters List to create its List of Electors.  To find out if your are on the most current Voters List, please call Legislative Services at 475-1775.

Are you qualified to vote?

There are two categories of electors for local government elections in the Province of British Columbia – Resident Electors and Non-Resident Property Electors.

You are qualified to register as a Resident Elector in the District of Saanich if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are 18 years old on or before voting day;
  • You are a Canadian citizen;
  • You have been a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
  • You have been a resident of the District of Saanich for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration;
  • You are not disqualified from voting by any law.

You are qualified to register as a Non-Resident Property Elector in the District of Saanich if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are 18 years old on or before voting day;
  • You are a Canadian citizen;
  • You have been a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration;
  • You have been a registered owner of real property in the District of Saanich for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration;
  • You are not eligible to register as a Resident Elector in the District of Saanich.

As a Non- Resident Property Elector, you may register in relation to one piece of property only and if more than one person owns the property, only one owner may register and that person must have the written consent of a majority of the other owners.

Please note that on October 24, 2005, the Chief Election Officer declared incumbent Frank Leonard elected by acclamation to the Office of Mayor.  Also declared elected by acclamation to the Office of School Trustee, School District 63 (Saanich), were incumbents Helen Parker and Mary Lynne Rimer.  For those citizens residing in the area of Saanich served by School District 61 (Greater Victoria), official results can be obtained by contacting the Office of the Secretary/Treasurer at 475-4106.
